The internationally renowned British master of contemporary landscape painting is presenting his 90-meter-long iPad frieze A Year in Normandie for the first time in a German museum. Via a composite of individual iPad paintings, the artist reviews his immediate surroundings over the course of a year, adopting the format of the famous Bayeux Tapestry to recount the Battle of Hastings in 1066, which inspired Hockney to create this continuum. He studied his environment painstakingly and in great detail, working outdoors with the aid of his iPad, using it to translate what he saw into an impressive, luminous record of the passing seasons.

A unique feature of this first-time showing of an iPad painting in these dimensions is the dialogue it encourages with Hockney works from the Würth Collection. Motifs from his time in Yorkshire, northern England, are juxtaposed with landscapes in northern France.

The exhibition concept also alludes to the long-standing contacts between Hockney, master of landscape painting, and the passionate collector, Reinhold Würth.
