Through contemporary forms of Surrealism, 31 international artists from the fields of digital and media art address urgent questions of the 21st century.

The exhibition explores Surrealism is a contemporary genre of art that dreams beyond reality, reflecting changes in our lived environment and helping to develop speculative future scenarios. Interactive video works, virtual and augmented reality experiences, multimedia installations and digital image worlds explore the impacts of globalization, digitalization and climate crisis, including post-colonial changes and increasing diversity.

Three main chapters Digital Bodies, Transforming Landscapes and Future Worlds, reference past, present and future perspectives. For the first time, contemporary works in the collection are to be presented next to the work of Max Ernst, fostering a dialogue and building new outlooks on current questions between the Surrealist master and contemporary artists.

The show is curated by Patrick Blümel. A comprehensive catalogue will be published in October 2023.
