Throughout his life, Swiss-born German artist Paul Klee (1879-1940) had an undying fascination with observing nature. As a field of study, a pedagogical model, a source of inspiration and a vital refuge, the contemplation of natural phenomena was for Klee, an art in its own right.

A selection of 200 of his works, on loan from the Zentrum Paul Klee as well as prominent international private collections and institutions, examines the role nature played in Klee’s life, formative years and artistic development. Helping to rediscover Klee’s oeuvre through the lens of nature, each section of the exhibition includes a work by a woman artist, of whom some were his contemporaries, such as Gabriele Münter (1877-1962), Emma Kunz (1892-1963) and Maruja Mallo (1902-1995), while others were, or are aligned with some of his artistic approaches like Sandra Knecht (Switzerland, 1968).

Curated by Martina Millà, Head of exhibitions at the Fundació Joan Miró in collaboration with Fabienne Eggelhöfer, Zentrum Paul Klee’s Chief curator with the exclusive support of Fundación BBVA.
