Natalia Goncharova, Two female dancers (c. 1923)

Avant-garde Russian artist Natalia Goncharova (Ladyjino 1881 – Paris 1962) used her art as a tool to challenge the limits of the artistic, social and gender conventions. From parading through the streets of Moscow displaying futurist body art, to creating internationally acclaimed designs for the theatre, her career was as diverse as it was wide-ranging throughout.

Tate Modern's exhibition will gather 170 international loans including highlights of early paintings such as Peasants Gathering Apples, 1991 (former Morozov collection), the monumental seven-part work The Harvest, 1911 and some of her scandalous paintings of nudes. The heart of the show will evoke Goncharova's remarkable 1913 retrospective of 800 works at the Mikhailova Art Salon in Moscow and a room will be dedicated to her work in fashion design, and her forays into interior design with the decorative screen Spring 1928 (never lent before). Finally, a room will be dedicated to her collaborations with Diaghilev and the Ballets Russes, the work for which she was best known from 1914 to the 1950s.

Natalia Goncharova is curated by Natalia Sidlina, Curator of International Art, and Matthew Gale, Head of Displays, with Katy Wan, Assistant Curator, Tate Modern.
