With Sonia Voss as Artistic Director, photo basel, Switzerland’s first and only art fair dedicated to photography, returns to the Volkshaus Basel for its 7th edition. Coinciding with the international modern and contemporary fair Art Basel, it will bring together 40 galleries/exhibitors from 18 nations around the world, and show over 550 photographic positions by over 130 artists.
Since its beginning, the fair fosters a dialogue between members of the photographic and broader art world communities, attracting collectors, visual art experts and media attention.
This year, photo basel pays a special tribute to Anita Neugebauer (1916 – 2012), the pioneering founder of “photo art basel” in 1976, a meeting point for collectors and enthusiasts and one of the very first art gallery with a sole focus on fine art photography. This “homage”, curated by her daughter Claudia and Alessa Widmer, also highlights Neugebauer’s collection centered around the oeuvre of her childhood friend Gisèle Freund whom she met while her family immigrated from Nazi Germany to Argentina.
