Suzanne Valadon. Self-portrait in the mirror (Autoportrait au miroir), 1927 Collection of the City of Sannois, on deposit at the Musée de Montmartre, Paris
A painter, draftswoman and printmaker, Suzanne Valadon (1865-1938) was an emblematic figure of the bohemian society in Montmartre. She played an important part in the avant-garde of Paris from 1910 to 1930.
Valadon worked in all genres, from portraiture, nude, still life and landscape. With a selection of 109 key works including oils on canvas or cardboard, drawings, prints, sculptures in plaster and bronze alongside other documentary materials, the exhibition offers a contextual view of the artist’s entire career.
Enriched with works by her contemporaries, French and Catalan artists such as Ramon Casas, Edgar Degas, Henri Matisse, Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, Miquel Utrillo and Santiago Rusiñol, the presentation explores the richness of the art scene of the time, the multiple interactions in the avant-garde circles and the societal conquest by women of their status as artists.
