On the 150th anniversary of Otto Mueller’s birth, the Münster-based LWL–Museum für Kunst und Kultur is organising a major exhibition dedicated to the Expressionist painter. The show presents his oeuvre in the context of his lifetime and the output of fellow artists, in particular, those of the Die Brücke group such as Ernst Ludwig Kirchner and Karl Schmidt-Rottluff. It also highlights Mueller’s approach to nudes and nature, his keen interest in other cultures and his relationships with models and partners.
Works by various contemporary artists deal with stereotypes of minorities in Mueller’s art: an installation by Black German scientist Natasha A. Kelly (born 1973) explores Mueller’s links with colonialism. Małgorzata Mirga-Tas, (born 1978), Luna De Rosa (born 1991) and Vera Lacková (born 1989), members of the Romani community, expose prejudices against Romani people and re-evaluate their depiction in Mueller’s works.
