The result of the first joint production of Kunstmuseum Liechtenstein and the Hilti Art Foundation, this exhibition spanning 1,750 square metres presents a series of photographs created in and for Liechtenstein by Candida Höfer (b.1944, Germany). Her photographs are juxtaposed in a dialogue with selected artworks from the collections of both institutions.

Höfer has previously created a number of site-specific groups of images, and the photographs taken in Liechtenstein during the autumn and winter of 2021 follow on from this approach. For the most part, Höfer photographed the subjects with a large format digital camera: interior and exterior views of the museum architecture, libraries, or storerooms that serve cultural purposes.

The characteristics of Höfer’s photographic oeuvre are an objective, down-to-earth visual idiom; a pronounced interest in structures and orders of space; and remarkable attention to detail. A member of the Düsseldorf "Becher School", her images are carefully planned and precisely executed, and their subject matter bespeaks human presence and influence, even if most of the spaces captured by the artist are deserted.
