JULIO GONZÁLEZ PRIZE - CARMEN CALVO

JULY 14 - NOVEMBER 6, 2022

INSTITUT VALENCIA D’ART MODERN | VALENCIA, SPAIN

Carmen Calvo, No espero al otro que también soy yo (I do not await the other that is also me); 2021. Artist's collection

The Julio González Prize was created in 2000 by Viviane Grimminger and Kosme de Barañano, then director of the IVAM Centro Julio González, in recognition of González's role as a precursor of modern and contemporary sculpture. It is awarded annually to a living artist of international renown as a tribute to the impact of their work.

The Spanish artist Carmen Calvo (born in Valencia, 1950) is the recipient of the 2022 edition of the prize. On the occasion of the award, the IVAM is organizing an exhibition that explores the main lines of research in her practice from the late 1960s to the present day through a broad selection of works and installations.

With her personal approach, the reuse of the remains of materials, objects and images has formed an essential part of the working methodology of Carmen Calvo. For the artist, the world is a field of experimentation that allows her to trace multiple histories on the basis of an archive in constant transformation.
