Pirelli HangarBicocca presents Abitare lo spazio. Inhabiting Space, the first Italian museum retrospective dedicated to Luciano Fabro (Turin, 1936–Milan, 2007) since his death. The exhibition explores the concept of the "habitat"—the cornerstone of Fabro’s perceptual and spatial research—through an extensive presentation bringing together approximately fifty of the artist’s most significant sculptures and installations, spanning the entirety of his career.
A leading figure of Arte Povera, Fabro developed an independent artistic language that combined sculpture, painting, and architecture while emphasizing perception, sensory experience, and the relationship between artworks, viewers, and their surroundings. Using materials ranging from marble and bronze to silk, lead, glass, and mirrors, he created environments that challenged conventional exhibition spaces and transformed viewing into an active experience. His habitats, conceived as real, inhabitable places rather than installations, reflected philosophical ideas about perception, meaning, and community.
Curated by Fiammetta Griccioli, Roberta Tenconi, and Vicente Todolí in collaboration with Silvia Fabro (Archivio Luciano e Carla Fabro), the retrospective offers an opportunity to reflect on Fabro's profound connection to the city of Milan while highlighting his lasting impact on contemporary sculpture worldwide.
