Strongly influenced by the world of the web, video games, reality TV and political propaganda, Neïl Beloufa (b. 1985, Paris) is one the most powerful voices of his generation. In his work, he addresses present-day issues that range from power relationships and nationalistic ideologies to digital surveillance, data collection, identity issues and a post-colonial understanding of the world.
Curated by Roberta Tenconi, Digital Mourning stems from a reflection on the concept of life in our technological world and its parallel disappearance. Playing on a combination and intermingling of genres, Digital Mourning is a new site-specific multimedia installation for the Shed space at Pirelli HangarBicocca within the context of a retrospective. Also presented is a wide selection of films and videos, including a new iteration of the ongoing project Screen Talk that is diffused on Pirelli HangarBicocca's website as well. Together, they form part of a computerized activation and re-editing system that abolishes any hierarchy between different types of information, thus playing with the viewers’ sensory experience and inviting them to reappraise their own beliefs and stereotypes.
