Giorgio Morandi's quintessential figurative painting is unlike any other 20th century pictorial œuvre, possessing a unique intensity, beauty, and timelessness.

A Backward Glance: Giorgio Morandi and the Old Masters is the first exhibition to highlight the key influence of Spanish, Bolognese and French Schools from the 16th, 17th, and 18th centuries in his work: discrete details such as El Greco's flowers; Zurbarán's use of light; humble details in Crespi's compositions; and Chardin's houses of cards.

Initially influenced by Italian masters (Giotto, Uccello, Masaccio) and later by Cézanne, Cubism, and Futurism, Giorgio Morandi (1890 - 1964) centered his practice on landscapes and still-lifes. His work gradually acquired a metaphysical orientation, reducing landscapes and objects (bottles, vases, boxes) to their most elementary sobriety.
