THE FORBIDDEN CITY IN MONACO

COURT LIFE OF THE EMPERORS AND EMPRESSES OF CHINA

GRIMALDI FORUM MONACO
14 July - 10 September 2017

Remarkable for its unprecedented scale and the quality of pieces on loan, The Forbidden City in Monaco - Court Life of the Emperors and Empresses of China, explores last Chinese imperial dynasty, the Qing Emperors (1644-1911), whose reigns coincided with the cultural and artistic apogee of Chinese history.

Extending over 3,200 square metres, the exhibition will gather more than 250 objects from the former imperial collections, some of which have never been shown outside of the Imperial Palace. Such a selection aims to highlight the everyday life of the emperors, their intimate passions and private collections, as well as their interest in science.

The result of a remarkable three-year collaboration between the Principality of Monaco and the People's Republic of China, this exhibition will include exceptional pieces from Beijing's Palace Museum, as well as loans from major European and American collections.

The Forbidden City in Monaco will be accompanied by a bilingual French/English catalogue published by SKIRA EDITORE (296 pages, 300 color illustrations, available July 2017).
