Alberto Giacometti’s involvement with the Surrealist movement lasted barely five years, from 1930 to 1935. During this period, he forged strong links with his artistic and intellectual companions including André Breton, Hans Arp, Claude Cahun, Leonora Carrington, Salvador Dalí, Paul Eluard, Max Ernst, André Masson, Joan Miró, Pablo Picasso, Yves Tanguy and Tristan Tzara.
Resulting from recent research in Giacometti’s and Breton’s archives, the exhibition brings together a selection of Surrealist works by the sculptor alongside a selection of masterpieces loaned by the Centre Pompidou, the Musée National Pablo Picasso in Paris, the Royal Museums of Fine Arts in Brussels, the Moderna Museet in Stockholm and private collections.
The strong friendship that was established between Giacometti and Breton is highlighted, as is his relationships with the Surrealist artists and intellectuals to whom he was closest.
Curators: Serena Bucalo-Mussely, curator at Fondation Giacometti, in collaboration with Constance Krebs, editorial director from the Association Atelier André Breton.
