David Zwirner is pleased to announce Luc Tuymans: Monkey Business, a presentation of new animations and works on paper by the Belgian artist simultaneously on view at the gallery’s Paris location and David Zwirner Online on the occasion of FIAC Online 2021 (March 2-7). Additional works will also be presented on the fair’s platform.

Created during the pandemic, these works mine the vast store of images that Tuymans has collected over the past decades. While some make reference to previous paintings, others present ideas for compositions to be realized later, while still others are looser and more experimental, allowing the artist to experiment with technique.

Long interested in the relationship between moving and static images, Tuymans has periodically made short animated clips from his paintings and drawings. Debuted in this presentation are two new animations, Monkeys and Orchid (Seconds IV). The multiple layers of representation featured in these works direct attention back to the medium and the exercise of painting itself, thus creating a trompe l’oeil effect in which all media appear simulated, while also exaggerating their technical differences.
