All Too Human

Bacon, Freud and a Century of Painting Life

28 February - 27 August 2018
Tate Britain | London, UK

With around 100 works by some of the most important modern British painters, All Too Human: Bacon, Freud and a Century of Painting Life celebrates how diverse artists have captured the intense experience of life in paint.

This landmark exhibition has Lucian Freud and Francis Bacon at its heart, grouping major and rarely seen works to explore the rich sensuality and intimacy of these two modern masters. Highlights include Freud's Frank Auerbach (1975-6) and Sleeping by the Lion Carpet (1996), and Bacon's Portrait of Isabel Rawsthorne (1966) and Study after Velazquez (1950).

The exhibition also brings together major works by Michael Andrews, Frank Auerbach, R.B. Kitaj, Leon Kossoff, Paula Rego, Jenny Saville, Walter Sickert, Stanley Spencer, Lynette Yiadom-Boakye and many others, making poignant connections across generations of artists and telling an expanded story of figurative painting in the 20th century and into the 21st.
