Fernand LÉger:
New Times, New Pleasures

23 NOVEMBER 2018 – 17 MARCH 2019
Tate LIVERPOOL | LIVERPOOL, UK

Featuring 50 abstract and figurative paintings from across Europe as well as drawings, a large-scale mural, films, graphic design, books and textiles, Tate Liverpool presents the first major UK exhibition in 30 years of renowned modern artist Fernand Léger (1881-1955).

Central to the artist’s work was a belief that art should be enjoyed by all. Fernand Léger: New Times, New Pleasures explores how Léger redefined the value of art to 20th century society and developed a unique visual style, heavily influenced by street advertising, posters and neon signs.

Influenced by his early training as an architect, Léger created grandly-scaled photo-murals that employed the same abstract and graphic style found in his painting. Exhibited for the first time in the UK will be Essential Happiness, New Pleasures 1937/2011 a work made in collaboration with architect and designer, Charlotte Perriand and a major highlight of the exhibition.
