The Boutet de Monvel Collection

Auction at Sotheby’s in Paris on 5 & 6 April 2016

This exceptional sale offers the first opportunity to discover a major ensemble of works by French society painter Bernard Boutet de Monvel (1881-1949), whose work subsequently influenced numerous artists ranging from Andy Warhol to Robert Mapplethorpe.

A painter, engraver, sculptor, decorator, as well as an illustrator for Vogue and Harper’s Bazaar, Boutet de Monvel was one of the most celebrated portraitists of his day, as well as a master of Art Deco and American Precisionism.

Boutet de Monvel rapidly became one of the favorite portraitists of the Café Society, with a list of models that included the Prince Sixte de Bourbon-Parme, William Kissan Vanderbilt, Lady Plunkett, and members of the Frick, Whitney and Astor families.

The works up for auction come directly from the artist's hotel particulier and studio in Paris.
