Christie's Dubai is proud to present the launch of a new publication by SKIRA Editore: Mahmoud Saïd, the first ever published œuvre overview for a Middle-Eastern artist. This catalogue raisonné documents the entirety of the work of this great catalyst of modern Arab art, who more than any other artist captured the rich tapestry of life in Egypt prior to the 1952 revolution. |
The art of Mahmoud Saïd (1897–1964) was deeply rooted in the authentic character and daily life of his native land. Fused with his Western training, his intrinsically Egyptian style emerged in conjunction with the rise of nationalism in the country, exercising an undeniable influence on the broader search for a national identity that inspired the birth of modern Egyptian art. |
Mahmoud Saïd incorporates all works attributed to Saïd, including 382 paintings, 379 drawings (most of which have never been published) and 238 documents and photographs from archival sources. It has been jointly researched and written by Valérie Didier Hess, Director, Business Development for Christie’s Middle East, and Dr. Hussam Rashwan, a prominent Alexandrian collector of modern Egyptian art. |
