Art and China after 1989:
Theater of the World

11 May - 23 September 2018
Guggenheim Museum Bilbao | Bilbao, Spain

The Guggenheim Museum Bilbao presents Art and China after 1989: Theater of the World, a major exhibition on Chinese contemporary art in a context framed by the Tiananmen protests, the end of the Cold War, the spread of globalization, and the rise of China as a world power.

Over the period from 1989-2008, Chinese artists have been both critical observers and agents of China's emergence as a global presence, placing their experiments firmly in a global art-historical context.

Divided into thematic and chronological sections, this exhibition encompasses a variety of artistic practices, including performance, painting, photography, installation, and video art as well as socially-engaged projects.
