Alexandre Estrela

MÉtal hurlant

Until 16 june 2019
Fondation Calouste Gulbenkian PARIS | PARIS, FRANCE

The Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation in Paris presents a site-specific exhibition, Métal Hurlant, by Portuguese artist Alexandre Estrela (1971). It features nine of his recent video works, four of which have never been publicity shown before.

Estrela's work is based on a vast and incisive investigation into the nature and scope of the "image". His work explores questions and themes related to the image's technical qualities - its manipulations (capturing, editing, etc.) or its reimaginations (illusion, expansion, destabilization). In this exhibition, the material of metal is a dominant theme. It is used both as a subject within his videos and physically in the form of projection screens.

Alexandre Estrela lives and works in Lisbon. A graduate of the School of Visual Arts in New York, professor at the Faculty of Fine Arts in Lisbon, he also manages the Oporto space dedicated to experimental films. Recent solo shows: Meio Concreto (Serralves Museum, Porto, 2013), Pockets of Silence (Reina Sofía, Madrid), Roda Lume (M HKA, Antwerp, 2016).
